Old Bessy by sirdubdub Old Bessy by sirdubdub
There's just something about the Behemoth that captures the spirit of the Assault mech'. A viewer can see immediately (more so than the Atlas or other IS designs) that these machines are immense and devastatingly powerful. There are some spheroid assault mechs, such as the Zues and Devastator, that convey this feeling of weight and mass; but the clan designs just LOOk more heavy-duty. The Behemoth/Stone Rhino is the epitome of this heavy duty equipment. With a squat, tank-like torso, fat, clumsy bird legs, and a proportionately tiny cockpit. It's unique aesthetics make it one of my favorite designs.
This particular Behemoth was piloted by the mercenary Sarah Anaval during the Tukayyid mech-rush. Anaval is also an avid hunter of the legendary White Wolf [link] her obsession sparked after being saved from multiple raids on her salvage convoys by the mysterious Mad Cat.
Her Behemoth had been salvaged vitually whole save for the cockpit, which had appeared to have been literally ripped off by a blast from a Comstar AC20 early in the fierce battle. The decapitated corpse of the Behemoth lay virtually unscathed for the remainder of the battle, buried under the wreckage of other mechs that shared its fate. Exactly two weeks after the last Comstar dropship had lifted off of Tukayyid this massive machine was salvaged by Sarah Anaval's rogue mercenary unit and once again made functional. The new head for the Behemoth was provided by Anaval's old Assasin, whose cockpit design is astoundingly similar to that of the Behemoth due to the age of the Star-League-era designs. (they do look somewhat similar [link] and[link])
Using secondary black-box data stores found in the torso, the techs discovered the impressive career of this particular Stone Rhino. It had been originally manufactured by the Smoke Jaguar clan on their home planet of Huntress. Years of Trials of Posession, however, saw the mech pass through the Toumans of Clan Wolf, Clan Diamond Shark, Clan Ghost Bear, Clan Jade Falcon, Clan Blood Spirit, and the Hell's Horses Clan, finally being deployed to Tukayyid by the Nova Cats. All in all this machine had been in service for almost two centuries, a tribute to the Clans' policy on waste and the sheer ruggedness of the design.

That looks painful. :-o

I heard the Stone Rhino was scrapped once upon a time. Glad the clans made it work. :P

you guys and your silly omni obsessions. so many more awesome non omni clan designs. I'd take a commando IIC or a packhunter any day, but if it were my choice I'd roll peregrine or cougar all the way.

The stone rhino prototype was designed just before the fall of the star league. The clans improved the design during their early years, but it was later eclipsed by *gasp* omnimech technology. There are very few clan-made, star league-era mechs that are actually omnimechs.

I admitted that I jumped the gun, but if you want to go toe to toe about BT, that's fine, but there's no need to be cheeky. There's obviously no such thing as original SLDF era omnimechs because the Star League officially ended in 2781 and CC invented the omnimech in 2854.

I've made another mistake. What I meant to say is that there are few "IIC" mechs that are omnis.

Indeed. We seem to be arguing a moot point. It seems that we both sent replies at the same time, creating a misunderstanding. Wasteful bouts of conflict, how illogical, how very un-clanlike. :p
On another point I would have to agree with you. I admire the sort of character that non-omni's have. For IS and Clan alike.
BTW, what's the CC?

ha. I used to be very clan when i started liking BT in 94 but I could give 2 craps about the clans now. I'm very inner sphere now. My book is set entirely in the Fed Suns (well its Prefecture IV now, whatever, screw the new storyline) except for about 3 seconds on Terra and Solaris. But my first book is all clan so yay for that. CC was my abbreviation of Clan Coyote.

I still love omni's but i like second lien clan mechs and regular IS mechs more now just because most of them have more aesthetic character than omni's, and because fora long time we had the same clan mech's shoved down our throat and there was a point where i was like "Yea timber wolves are great, stfu, i don't care."

For example I'm smitten with a lot of the IICs like:
Hunchback IIC
Highlander IIC
Marauder IIC
Commando IIC (probably my favorite light mech)
Clint IIC
Shadow Hawk IIC

and a lot of other second line mechs like the Corvis and the Canis are my favorites.

From a literary standpoint non-omni's make for a more interesting challenge because they aren't easily refit or repaired (from a scenario point of view also) so because I'm kind of leaning on the Inner Sphere side now it seems more apt to go with fewer omnimechs.

And if it's not obvious, I'm extremely anti-new mechwarrior. I've officially refused to recognize everything that happened after Katherine lost the war, for any purposes. However, I did read Ghost War and despite it being first person (which I absolutely hate with a passion) I liked the book and I kind of was able to accept what was happening with the storyline, until Victor wss in the book. And then I find out he gets assassinated. That was the last straw, I said "Okay they jumped the shark, jumped back over the shark, threw in more sharks that genetically fused together into one great big Strana Mechty diamond-shark-on-crack that would make Samuel Jackson cry, and then they jumped over that new shark with a super-heavy mech". Victor surviving over 100 years only to get assassinated was just the stupidest thing possible after the Jihad idea so I can't give the new storyline any credit. On the other hand, it provided an excellent opportunity for new stories to write about, especially if you could foresee that the storyline would go the way it has so far.
Haha sorry for going on a massive tangent. I should devote th is energy to actually finishing my book.

Ah, ye good ole' Stone Rhino.

It's sad that in the one game it was in it sucked so bad; it was like a darn bullet magnet in Mechwarrior 2: Ghost Bears Legacy.
